Abstract: G. Călinescu’s novellas could be interpreted as didactic parables, impecca bly written, with heroes shaped after Balzac’s characters, acting in a romantic setting, who are made to play by the rules. Some of them pathetically declaim their unhappi ness (Catina Damnatul [Catina the Damned]), others deliver emphatic lines (Iubita lui Bălcescu [Balcescu’s Sweethart]), whereas a third category performs in a comic register – the very Călinescu signature – with a subtle intellectual irony, a different score that exudes that sort of atmosphere of anxious tension caused by the social unrest between two conflicting strata: the peasants and the landowners (Noi vrem pămînt! [We Want Land!]). Thus, reading becomes a cognitive exercise, not just an aesthetic pursuit.
