Through a detailed analysis of its structure, stylistic devices, and imagery, the article reveals the poem’s strategies of adopting and revising the established conventions of traditional Greek spring poetry, with particular focus on its enumerative method and formal innovations, that ultimately distinguish A.P. 9.363 within the context of Hellenistic poetry. Many Homeric references, quoted or paraphrased passages, are placed in key sequences of the novel. The interactions with the epic poem facilitate the deciphering of the major theme of the novel, that of exile. Far from being merely decorative, a pretext for a parade of erudition, the Homeric reverberations reveal hidden meanings of the events that escape a naive observer. The relationships between the modern characters can be better understood by analogy with the relationships between the Homeric heroes. The frequent references to the eleventh book of the Odyssey, which depicts Odysseus’ descent into Hades, suggest that the return to the abandoned home means death. The novel proclaims the impossibility of finding one’s homeland after a long period spent elsewhere and thus…

The “consumption of images” (Susan Sontag) developed and the “mechanical reproduction” (Walter Benjamin) accelerated, accompanying the process of modernization of society. The demonstration makes a cutout that highlights an early episode susceptible to significant interpretive repositioning. Examining the family memoirs and publicist archives show that the young Radu Stanca was educated under the guidance of his father, a priest and writer, and not under that of his older brother. Inaccurately, until now, the critical tradition accredited the publicist Horia Stanca as the future poet’s mentor. Comparing the literature of the father with that of the son, is obvious that qualitative cultural leap occurred, later theorized by Radu Stanca…

Developed from an unfinished manuscript, Apocalips (from the “Portuguese period”), it becomes a panoramic, multilayered novel, entailing a marked shift in both narrative strategy and the author’s usual working rhythm. Whereas earlier novels (from Isabel and the Devil’s Waters or Maitreyi to Return from Paradise, The Huligans, or Marriage in Heaven) were, by Eliade’s own account, written spontaneously in brief, intensive bursts, The Forbidden Forest was produced slowly and laboriously, in a syncopated rhythm punctuated by crises that prompted sometimes radical solutions, including the restructuring of large sections or even of an entire volume. This article reconstructs, step by step, the prolonged and intricate genesis of the novel by systematically examining detailed testimony in Eliade’s…

Established in the years between the two World Wars as a representative of the Romanian literary avant-garde, and author of poetry volumes that challenged the morals of the time – such as Journal of Sex (1929) or Invective Poem (1933) – Geo Bogza soon embraced a career in journalism, without abandoning poetry altogether. His 1930s feature articles on workers in the oil and gold-mining industries, published in the press of the 1930s, reveal, in the terminology of North American journalism, the profile of a local muckraker. These texts, however, also stand out for their aesthetic quality, as Geo Bogza – one of the masters of Romanian literary reportage –…

Eminescu in the privacy of his working notebooks. The text, preserved only in draft form, has not previously been subjected to thorough analysis, which has prevented firm conclusions regarding the poet’s cultural formation and study practices. The exercise appears to date from his early activity at the editorial office of the newspaper Timpul and was originally conceived as linguistic preparation for projected Romanian translations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey. Eminescu sought the most effective technique to accomplish this objective, and he immediately realised that systematic Latin study was a time consuming and impractical endeavour, so he abandoned the learning process after the first completed task. Eminescu, whether it is poetry, prose or journalism. Organicist thinking, with the poet’s well-known conception of the natural state (inspired by the model of the „state of ants and bees”), acquires the most varied updates at the level of the entomological imaginary: from the paradisiacal one of lunar or island utopias, passing through the enchanting representations associated with wild and forested nature, to the dark ones of melancholy, loneliness, decomposition and alienation; all these images are subjec ted to a differentiated examination, following their artistic relevance and contextual implications. the „miniature” vision, a microcosmic mirror of the macrocosm, the „narcotic” and erotic aestheticism, the combination of angelic (associated with bliss) and malignant (associated with dissolution) symbolism, are expressions of a diverse bestiary…
