It offers an analytical synthesis of European Romanticism in general and of its Romanian expression in particular, starting from the hypothesis that several of its core principles, methods, and thematic nuclei have endured – albeit in transformed guises – into the present. The study is grounded in the premise that, although Romanticism can be historically delimited – whether as High Romanticism or in its more diluted Biedermeier forms – the Romantic parenthesis within European thought and culture has never fully closed. Against this background, the early attempts to transcend Romanticism become all the more significant – attempts that, as this paper argues, can be traced within Titu Maiorescu’s work and his broader cultural policies. Macedonski (1831 – ?), an author of limited literary significance whose work nonetheless holds documentary value owing to his illustrious surname. The connection is not coincidental: the officer drawn to poetic pursuits was the uncle of the poet Alexandru Macedonski. The lieutenant’s literary acti vity is confined to a single volume, Buchetul primăverei [The Bouquet of Spring] (1862), published under the signature M.D. Macedonsky II. His military career, likewise, was of no particular distinction, being overshadowed by that of his elder brother, General Alexandru D. Macedonski, the poet’s father. Our research is based on an unpublished document discovered in the Romanian National Military Archives, which provides new information about the biography of the lieutenant–versifier. At the same…

Călinescu’s novellas could be interpreted as didactic parables, impecca bly written, with heroes shaped after Balzac’s characters, acting in a romantic setting, who are made to play by the rules. Some of them pathetically declaim their unhappi ness (Catina Damnatul [Catina the Damned]), others deliver emphatic lines (Iubita lui Bălcescu [Balcescu’s Sweethart]), whereas a third category performs in a comic register – the very Călinescu signature – with a subtle intellectual irony, a different score that exudes that sort of atmosphere of anxious tension caused by the social unrest between two conflicting strata: the peasants and the landowners (Noi vrem pămînt! [We Want Land!]). Thus, reading becomes a cognitive exercise, not just an aesthetic pursuit. Key-words: G. Călinescu’s novellas, didactic parables, Romanian literature, irony. Călinescu defined, in various contexts, his profession of faith. At first, when he was looking for his path to singularization, the writer oscillated between contrasting conceptions. After that, with his rise, marked by the appearance of the biography Viața lui Mihai Eminescu [The Life of Mihai Eminescu] (1932), the author defined himself predominantly as a literary historian. To this end, he transfor med the study of Eminescu’s life and work from a cult of unreserved admirers into a discipline of literary criticism. After that, he assumed the role of a reading pedagogue, making “directional criticism”. This option was risky, placing him in a potential con f lict with the group of synchronists (Pompiliu Constantinescu, Șerban Cioculescu and Vladimir Streinu), something that became evident after the publication of the Istoriei…

Călinescu, drawing on the theoretical framework of Balzac’s Théorie de la démarche and Barbara Korte’s Body Language in Literature. Călinescu’s novels feature opening scenes where gathered characters are distinguished by their trademark gestures. Group dynamics unfold theatrically through interaction patterns – entrance order, greeting types, exchanged gazes – with potentially cinematic qualities. T he analysis demonstrates that Călinescu uses body language to distinguish protago nists: mechanical gestures of minor characters contrast with the fluid, unpredictable movements of figures like Ioanide, Otilia, and Caty Zanoaga, conferring power, mys tery, and charm. Our hypothesis is that Călinescu links charm to vitality, to life force, manifested through movement with distinctive nonchalance. We investigate the possi bility that the charm missing from Otilia’s mature photos stems from the movements and behaviour that seamlessly unite contradictory meanings, creating the impression of…

Călinescu’s collaboration with the communist regime has been the subject of endless debate and remains a contested issue, this study aims to present objectively—without anger or bias—the nature of the relationship between the eminent critic and the communist authorities during that period. To this end, the research draws on information from the communist propaganda newspaper „Glasul patriei” („Voice of the Country”), which was initially published in Berlin on Pankow Street (between 1955 and 1960), and subsequently in Bucharest on Christian Tell Street (between 1960 and 1972). The documentation under analysis covers the years 1955–1969, enabling us to trace the evolution of Călinescu’s public interventions—from the republication of his articles from „Contemporanul” („The Contemporary”) during the newspaper’s foreign period, to the encomiastic pieces he himself signed as “the divine critic” in what became a tool for denigrating the Romanian…

Călinescu’s The Life of Mihai Eminescu between 1932 and 1939. Published at a time when the poet’s idealized image had already been embedded in the collective consciousness, Călinescu’s work provoked virulent reactions from some cultural figures. Hostile reviews were complemented by balanced critiques and a unique review, marked by nihilism, signed by Eugen Ionescu. The controversies stirred by the Cernăuți literary group, alongside the publication of novels such as Mite by E. Lovinescu and Adonis by Cezar Petrescu, as well as various studies about Eminescu’s life, gave Călinescu the opportunity to reflect on this literary phenomenon. Within this context, ‚the divine critic’ introduces the concept of the eminescological disease, identifies different typologies of eminescologists, and discusses literary…

Călinescu’s critical work is vast and offers not only opportunities to ascertain how extensive his concerns and knowledge in various fields were, but also the depth of his theoretical reflection. Unfortunately, sometimes, the apparent facility of his writing could lead to false judgments, because some of the critics failed to notice, beyond the foam of the texts, the intensity of the ideas, their topicality, the sense of accuracy combined with a rare sense of the relativity of things and opinions, the ability to handle an immense amount of information, a complex analytical spirit and a special gift for synthetic constructions. A text preserved for many years among his manuscripts and only relatively recently made accessible to the general public, namely, the first version of The Universe of Poetry, shows once again a critic open to broad…
