This article is intended to take a look into three discourses on identity, showcasing a shift of perspective in the American cultural studies of the 1970s, 2000s, and 2010s. Lionel Trilling’s mostly culturalist approach, in the 1970s, gave rise to critics coming from intellectuals affiliated to the whole political spectrum, from the neo-con to the New Left. Charles Guignon transferred the concept of identity from the “high” territories of elite culture to the “lower” field of pop-culture, from self-help literature and media to punk rock and heavy metal. Somogy Varga followed its trace from the first self-help manual (in…

Thus, concepts like lyricism, inner analysis of characters, urban vs. rural material will be presented by developing the lovinescian ideas and then we try to find out a correspondent in the current practice of narratology. Therefore, we will discover that Lovinescu’s implicit theory, presented by an inductive endeavor, pleads for an objective novel, with an omniscient, omnipresent narrator, and for characters presented from an unlimited perspective concerning the exterior life, but also the inner life, and voice of the narrator must be without emotional implication. The analysis of the data recorded in this sheet resorts to the psychoanalytic grid, envisaging at the same time some concepts of analytical psychology. It can be noticed, from this perspective, that Dr. Walter displays a prevailing death instinct (Thanatos instinct) which explains the path of his existence. He is a (self-)sacrificed savior, a lover of death. A man who always walks with death in his soul, with his attention almost totally absorbed by death, a man who offers himself, indifferently and without protest, contemplating death. Here lies “the secret” of Doctor Walter. Keywords: Dr. Walter, Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu, psychoanalytic criticism, analytical psychology, interdisciplinary perspectives on literature. Mircea Martin demonstrates that the Pascalian duality is in fact contradicted by the subtle paradoxes of those great, last critics who reinvented literature in their effort to render the dialogue with themselves into a relevant, transparent dialogue with the otherness of literature. The same problem was widely debated by the author of this work, Vlad-Ion Pappu, in the literary file Edgar Papu and Protochronism in the space of the “Luceafărul” magazine, Eikon Publishing House, Cluj, 2016. The occasion for this academic recurrence was the celebration of a quarter century after Edgar Papu’s extinction, as well as the recent occurrence of a new contribution to the theme in the monumental synthesis elaborated by Acad. Eugen Simion, Posterity of Eugen Lovinescu, Tracus Arte Publishing House, Bucharest, 2017. Conceived tripartite, the current considerations examine the reception of the work History of Modern Romanian Civilization (1924–1925) by Eug. Lovinescu in the interwar critique, present the landmarks that unified Edgar Papu’s vision of Romanian literature, emphasizing the homogeneity of his judgments from the interwar period (1932)…

PRECIZĂRITitle: THE PROBLEM OF PROTOCHRONISMPages: 267–286Language: RomanianURL: https://ritl.ro/pdf/2017/15_E_Papu.pdf Abstract: We are dealing with the ultimate variant of the Romanian Protochronism theory, conceived by the scholar Edgar Papu (1908-1993), reproduced serially in the newspaper “Românul” between March and July 1991. His idea about the Romanian aesthetic forms anticipating or preparing currents, motives or procedures that were later to be experienced and dealt with by the Western culture was published twice before (1977 and 1989), but this one is the first uncensored text diffused after the fall of the communist regime in Romania. Running chronologically, the paper starts with a 16th c. work – contemporary to Machiavelli’s The Prince (1513) – due to the Lord of Walachia, Néagoé Bassarab, entitled The Lectures meant for his son Theodosius (1519-1521), which establishes a canon of reigning principles and skills at hand to his heir to the throne, considered by the author Edgar Papu to anticipate the appearance of the Baroque type of “hombre secreto” described in the treaties of the Jesuit monk Baltasar Gracián, called El Discreto (1646) and Oráculo…

Unlike the minor or satiric prose about the Romanian townlets of 1900, Bogza’s piece of writing is regarded as a form of paradoxical rehabilitation of the provincial anonymity by a grid partly indebted to the vanguard. Without ceasing to represent a space of failure and unfulfillment, the province thus becomes a space of unusual experiences and of…
