Călinescu descends from the heights of pure aesthetics onto the battlefield of ideological aesthetics, adapting his discourse to the imperatives of the moment. To the subtle theorization of the one-line poem, an innovative lyrical form proposed by Ion Pillat in his volume Poems in one verse (Poeme într-un vers, 1936), and the categorical assertion in his Univers of Poetry (Universul poeziei, 1947) that ‘the masses are poor conductors of beauty’, being incurably ignorant, we juxtapose ideas from a recently discovered quasi-unpublished article, dating from the fall of 1946, in which the critic wants to persuade his readers that ‘Bach’s music is accessible even to peasants’, whereas the artist, ‘a highly qualified worker, duty-bound…

It also delves into literary history as a reflection of the reverence the poet extends to the eminent cultural figure G. Călinescu, in gratitude for having his verses commented upon in the latter’s renowned column in Contemporanul. We are not, strictly speaking, dealing with a correspondence, but rather with a brief epistolary moment in Sorescu’s life. The two letters sent to G. Călinescu during the final months of his life received no reply. Yet they reveal Marin Sorescu’s “monologue” on his own lyrical universe, through which Călinescu gains insight into the young poet’s views on the role of poetry, interwoven with examples from his own work. This unveiling of a creative programme unfolds in the form of a confession, one that does not…

Starting from several dedications on books that the writer had originally offered to personalities such as Mihail Petroveanu, Mihnea Gheorghiu, Dumitru Micu or Nicolae Manolescu, volumes which later came into the possession of George Corbu Junior, the study reconstructs, from a memorialistic perspective, several episodes from the postwar history of Romania. The text brings to light information of an emotional nature, as well as cultural and, not least, political aspects. Any initial impression of a composite construction is dispelled by the perception of a carefully designed composition which, beyond thematic recurrences, emerges in the ordered and subtly gradated alternation between predominantly analytical texts and predominantly synthetic ones, through the unity of diction: not only through the striking refinement of lexical acuity, but also through the organization of the…

The focus will fall mainly on the intellectual activity of three interwar Romanian thinkers: Mircea Vulcănescu, Emil Cioran, and Mircea Eliade. One of the directions we will emphasize is the fact that Eugen Simion convincingly demonstrated the real manifestation of this Romanian existentialism — that is, a local current of thought which preceded the postwar French existentialism. We will also underline the idea that although Eugen Simion did not write a history of Romanian literature but rather a history of Romanian writers, he built this project under the influence of two expressions coined by Mircea Vulcănescu, both proving to be extraordinary intuitions: “historicism through resignation” and “activism out of despair.” Keywords: Eugen Simion, Romanian existentialism, Mircea Vulcănescu, Emil Cioran,Mircea Eliade, history of Romanian writers….

This dimension is most clearly articulated in his seminal exegesis of Mircea Eliade as a novelist (Mircea Eliade. Nodurile şi semnele prozei), which we analyze, from this vantage point, in the first part of our study. As we further argue in the second part, Simion’s theoretical enterprise in The Return of the Author (Întoarcerea autorului) appears to be structured around a mythic narrative – the tale of Diana and Actaeon – that comes to symbolize the quest for unity within the literary work, a unity that less discerning critics risk fragmenting. Moreover, Simion advances this vision beyond the limits of literary criticism itself, extending it, in a characteristically prophetic gesture, to a broader cultural phenomenon: migrant literature. It…

On this occasion, the “Eugen Barbu case” has once again been in the centre of attention, causing different reactions, in which the mistruth has overlapped the truth. In the first part, the study analyzes the accusations of plagiarism against one of Barbu’s benchmark novels. In 2016, the “România literară” journal published a file to let it be understood that the novel Groapa (1957) would have encapsulated the micro-novel Hotel Maidan (1935) signed by Stoian Gh. Tudor (1911–1941). Dissected point by point, the evidence on which the demonstration from “România literară” relies, which has been embraced – without…

The former contempt of the academia for science fiction has led to a reassessment and “repackaging” by the writers of their works as belonging to the speculative fiction genre. The inner space science fiction, sometimes rebranded as dystopian, cli-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction has gradually moved away from the outer worlds of the hard sci-fi. Several interpretation keys can be discerned from the analysis of the dystopian genre’s profitable market, including collective anguish during what may currently seem to be the End Times, guilt for the climate collapse, spiritual masochistic pleasure, gender issues etc., keeping in mind, though, the obvious peril of oversimplification. It represents an effort to understand the world through man’s struggle with himself and the world around him. The characters are strongly connected to nature, which serves as the foundation of the ancient spirit of humanity. They go through a gnoseological hell, recognizing the harmony between the deepest layers of existence and archaic-mythical patterns, as well as ancient and pagan customs. To depict the primal…
