LATIN PATTERN IN ROMANIAN BIBLICAL TEXTSPages: 23-36Language: RomanianURL: https://ritl.ro/pdf/2013/3_E_Pavel.pdf Abstract: In the beginning, there are examined several perspectives on the authority of the Slavonic originals in the compilation of the first Romanian translations of the biblical text in the sixteenth century, against the background of their rather pale contenders, namely the Latin model and, respectively, the German one. The hypothesis that the primitive translation of the Psalms into Romanian valorized a previous translation from Latin – possibly from the Psalterium Romanum, a translation that was supposedly revised or rewritten on the basis of a Slavonic version, for inclusion in the Oriental canon – is not sufficiently credible. Nor is the opinion concerning the use of Luther’s original in the translation of portions of text from the Tetraevangelion of Sibiu in 1551–1553 irrefutable, as in these passages there are also similarities with Theodore Beza’s edition of the New Testament….

Theories concerning the historical conditions of its creation (namely its time, place and author), the display of the facts in comparison to whatever details were included in other historical sources, as well as the issue of its genre all undergo critical analysis. It is then argued that it, in fact, is a mascherata (masquerade), which owes much to the Italian Renaissance tradition of carnival shows bearing this generic name. The Romanian play is more similar to such works than to the Baroque theatre, which had previously been the preferred solution of Romanian researchers of the past decades. Concerning its historical basis, it is shown that, following comparison to contemporary accounts of the death of Grigore III,…

The major directions of our approach concern three aspects: the identification of research sites that might bring into play the intersection between texts, folklore creations and iconographic representations; analysing the relation between the image and the look it is reflected in, according to the socio-cultural context we take into consideration (that of the emergence of the image and today’s one respectively), with a special focus on the faces of Death that are inserted, over the 18th–19th centuries, in the iconography of the worship monuments in Muntenia; sketching a possible research…

As a consequence of cultural openness manifested in the 90’s, a fruitful period of takeovers of world literature thought a large amount of translations, they managed to win the international literary market by adopting the writing style of influence and success in the West, and – a very important detail – by adapting the content of their daily literary readings at the local realities. Coming from the Transylvanian region, Florina Ilis is considered one of the most talented and the best rated Romanian (still) young novelists. Her books have been appreciated by critical reviewers, awarded and proposed to be translated into foreign languages. The herein contribution describes and examines in the form of a dictionary item, this prodigious literary activity, performed in the era of globalization. Keywords:…

The theoretical framework is based on the definition of evaluation and on the four key parameters of evaluation identified by Thompson and Hunston (2001). The results show that all the parameters are represented in the text and that the use of this scheme allows a structured investigation of the various occurences of evaluative fragments within the text analyzed. However, there are also instances of evaluation, as irony or humorous evaluation, for example, which can be explained only through a…

Analysis of the two categories of documents, i.e., curse books and books of testimony, offers data regarding a normative mechanism validated equally by the ecclesiastical and the lay authorities in eighteenth century Romania. The ritual of testifying under a bishop’s malediction emphasises not only certain practices specific to common law, but also elements having contributed to a pattern of thinking and expression of religious sentiment at both official and extra-ecclesiastical levels. This study draws on a corpus of texts comprising curse books and books of testimony held by the Bucharest Metropolitan Church and the Romanian National Archives, as well as documents cited in other volumes on this topic.
